47 years on, man remains in voluntary confinement

Tezpur (Assam), Oct 12  For close to half a century now, he has kept himself confined to the four walls of a room, not leaving it even when war raged outside and deaths took place in his family.

When others fled for their lives during the Chinese aggression, Thula Borah, now 63, remained locked inside the room in his house at Deuri Gaon near Tezpur in Assam's Sonitpur district.

Toll in Assam violence rises to 13

Guwahati: The toll in the weekend massacre by tribal separatists in an Assam village rose to 13 with a woman succumbing to her injuries at a hospital on Wednesday, government officials said.

A government spokesperson said a 23-year-old woman with bullet wounds in her stomach died early Wednesday.

N. Bhattacharyya, a doctor at Guwahati Medical College, said: "We tried our best, but the injury in her abdomen was so extensive that she did not survive."

Normal life disrupted in Assam by bandh

Guwahati, Oct 6  Normal life was disrupted in several districts of Assam today following a 12-hour state-wide bandh called by several organisations to protest against the killing of 14 persons by the NDFB on Sunday.

The bandh, which began at 5 AM, affected Sonitpur, Nagaon, Morigaon, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Kokrajhar and Udalguri districts with shops and business establishments remaining closed.

Road blockades by the protesting people were also set up in several parts of the districts.

Assam villagers take up arms against militants

There's heavy exchange of fire between security forces and Bodo militants in Assam close to the place where Bodo militants killed 11 people a couple of days ago. And after the killings the villagers have decided to take up arms to counter both militant terror as well as government inaction.

After a face off between villagers and security forces, the DGP's convoy was broken down with bow and arrows and sticks.

Angry Bhimajuli residents would not allow any government functionaries to enter the area. Even the DGP was not spared.

Sixty-five people fall sick after eating prasad

Nalbari(Assam): At least 65 persons, including women and children, fell ill after eating prasad on Laxmi Puja day in Nalbari district, where 62 persons were affected by food poisoning last week.

People of Deharkuchi village fell ill after eating soaked gram offered to them as 'prasad' late on Sunday.

While 40 persons were admitted to Sanekuchi Rural Hospital on Sunday, 25 seriously ill were admitted on Monday, said District Joint Director of Health Services Dr P.C. Choudhury.
