Japan starts growing roots in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: It was in 1960s that Japanese battery-maker Novino first charged up Gujarat’s investment scenario by setting up a unit in Vadodara. Barring Nissan Chemicals, which set up shop in 1970s in the state, there were no significant investment inflows from Japan into Gujarat after that. It took years before Hitachi, which set up an air-conditioner plant in Kadi, 40 km north of the state capital, in 2004.

Officials on either side toiled hard to take business ties forward but results were far from satisfying. Finally, the investment promises made by Japanese companies over the years have started to show on the ground. Last month, Idemitsu, a leading petroleum company, has identified land for its Rs 125-crore lubricant manufacturing plant in Jhagadia. A leading Japanese medical equipment maker is close to identifying land in central Gujarat for its unit.

Nanotechnology to aid forensic detection of crime

Ahmedabad, Nov 2  Forensic science is exploring new horizons with Gandhinagar-based Directorate of Forensic Science (DFS), starting a new research on application and use of nanotechnology for solving complex crimes, in a first of its kind project in the country.

"In many cases, forensic evidence is key to obtaining a conviction and often only very small quantities of forensic material are found from the crime scene. Use of nanotechnology will usher us into a new era in forensic detection of crime," Director, DFS J M Vyas told PTI.

Narendra Modi's condition improves

The condition of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who is suffering from swine flu, has improved overnight, doctors attending on him said on Saturday.

"His temperature has started coming down and cold and cough is also improving," virologist Atul Patel, one of the five doctors treating Modi, said.

Gujarat CM, Narendra Modi tests positive for swine flu

Gandhinagar, Oct 30  Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who returned from abroad two days back, tested positive for swine flu today, a doctor attending on him said.

Samples of Modi were taken for test yesterday after he showed symptoms of cough, cold and fever, Atul Patel, one of the four doctors in the team looking after the Chief Minister, said.

Absconding rapist of UK journalist caught

A hotel owner from Udaipur who was convicted of raping a British journalist in December 2007, has been arrested by the police in Wapi, Gujarat. He was absconding after being released on bail.

A fast track court in Udaipur had sentenced the hotel owner to life imprisonment. The rape victim was one of his lady guests - a British tourist. The tourist had come to stay in Udaipur on December 19, 2007, on the night of December 23, she asked hotel owner Parbat Singh for a blanket. Parbat Singh used that as a pretext to force his way into the tourist's room and rape her.
