Satyajit Ray inspires Italian director duo

Kolkata, Nov 18 Italian directors Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel won the Best European Film award at Cannes this year and the filmmakers who repeated their win at the Mumbai International Film Festival, say they were inspired by Indian cinema legend Satyajit Ray.

Frimmel and Covi's minimalistic offering 'La Pivellina' (The Little One) won the Jury Grand Prize at the recently concluded Mumbai International Film Festival.

Third Metro suicide in 60 hours

KOLKATA: A youth in his late 20s jumped in front of a Metro train at Sovabazar-Sutanuti station on Sunday afternoon. The suicide the third in 60 hours has left Metro Railway officials worried about security and safety at Metro stations.

A 22-year-old chartered accountancy student had committed suicide at Girish Park station on Saturday. The day before, a 30-year-old man had jumped in front of a train at Rabindra Sarobar station.

Lawyers' cease work hits high court

KOLKATA: Work was disrupted at Calcutta High Court on Tuesday as lawyers stayed away from attending courts to demand the filling up of judges' posts that have fallen vacant. The high court has 18 vacancies at present.

While members of the High Court Bar Association, Bar Library Club and Incorporated Law Society responded to the eight-day ceasework call by the bar association, a few courts heard cases moved by petitioners in person. Many litigants not aware of the ceasework returned frustrated.

Maoists kill ex-CPM leader

MIDNAPORE: Suspected Maoists shot dead a former CPM panchayat pradhan, Anil Mahato (54), at Bhutashole in Salboni on Sunday afternoon.

Mahato was the pradhan of Satpati panchayat in the early '90 s. Later, he worked as a teacher at the local Madhyamik Sikshya Kendra. Earlier in the day, CPM had organized a huge rally from Changshole to Bhadutola in Salboni as a challenge to Maoists. Mahato, however, did not take part in it.
