In a first of its kind initiative in the country, traffic cops in Pune are going hi-tech. They have been given Blackberry phones by which they will be able to record traffic violations. Now, if a person is caught breaking the law three times, their license would be suspended.
Figures from the national crime records bureau report explicitly mention that in proportion to the city's population, Pune ranks first in the number of road accident fatalities in the country. With tighter norms, the idea is to tame the errant drivers and bring some discipline on city roads.

Woman dies in police custody

PUNE: A 45-year-old woman, who was caught red-handed by the Chatushrungi police selling illicit liquor at Pashan, died in the police van under mysterious circumstances. The incident occurred on Wednesday around 10 pm.
The deceased has been identified as Laxmi Dhaku Dhanawat (45), a resident of Sanjay Gandhi Vasahat in Pashan. While Laxmi's relatives allege that she died after the police beat her up brutally, the police claim that Laxmi had complained of chest pain and was rushed to the Aundh Chest hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Thane, Nov 19 Three Congress candidates, who were defeated in the recent Maharashtra assembly polls, have squarely blamed two senior NCP leaders for their lose in the elections and demanded disciplinary action against them.
The Congress leaders -- Dileep Deherkar, Subash Kanade and Manoj Shinde -- who contested for Ovala-Majwada, Thane and Kopri Pachpakha constituencies respectively, made the allegations in a news conference here yesterday.

Two teenagers die in bike-truck collision

Two teenagers died after a truck collided with their motorcycle at Ravet in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Saturding morning on the road leading to D Y Patil College at Ravet.
The injured teens were immediately taken to a nearby hospital by passers-by but were declared dead on arrival. Police identified them as Arul Kishore Nadar (17), a resident of Vikas Nagar in Kivale, Dehu Road and Pratap Kondia Reddy (18) of Indrayani Darshan, Dehu Road.
