Amritsar, Nov 24 The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will announce its new president tomorrow, even as incumbent Avtar Singh Makkar is likely to get another one-year term as the head of the religious body.
Of the 185-member SGPC, 170 are elected while others are nominated. In effect, it has only 179 members now after the death of six members.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today chaired a meeting of its General House. A total of 117 members, including minister Sucha Singh Langah, former SGPC chiefs Bibi Jagir Kaur and Kirpal Singh Bandungar were present.
Today's meeting unanimously authorised Sukhbir to choose the next SGPC president to be announced tomorrow.
If Makkar is chosen, it would be his fifth term as SGPC chief starting on November 23, 2005.
